Media

The media and creative industries are special. Why? Because they are based on the fundamental value of freedom of expression which is the cornerstone of a democratic society.

Freedom of the press, or freedom of expression in the media, does not mean that these sectors are not regulated. In fact some parts of the media industry are highly regulated by tradition, broadcasting in particular because it is a licensed medium and because of its impact on the population. Each sector has its specificity and is increasingly concerned by the EU legislative framework: rules on advertising, right to privacy, defamation and rights to the personality, copyright, piracy, access to spectrum, investment in original production and independent producers, rules on VAT and trade negotiations are only a few of the issues that are dealt with in Brussels. Recently, the Internet has created new regulatory challenges to ensure a level playing field between market players and new entrants.

Hill+Knowlton Strategies has specific competence in the regulatory challenges that the media and creative industries are facing, in particular in publishing, broadcasting, audiovisual production, music and distribution of cultural products. We can offer a tailored approach to clients’ needs both in Brussels and at national level through our pan-European network.
